About Narsingdi

The village/city of Narsingdi is located in the Narsingdi District in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh, lying about 50 km northeast of Dhaka city. Narsingdi may be reached by both waterway and the Dhaka-Sylhet highway and lies on the northern bank of the Meghna River, with the town? of Tarowa to the north, Hazipur to the east and Kamargaon and Chouwala to the West. In addition to the Meghna River, the Arial Kha, Shitalakshya, Brahmaputra, Paharea and Haridhoa Rivers also flow through the district.

Narsingdi is divided into:
Two (2) municipalities: Madhabdi and Narsingdi

Six (6) upazilas (roughly equivalent to subdivisions): Belabo, Monohardi, Narsingdi Sadar, Palash, Raipura and Shibpur; and
Fourteen (14) union parishads Alokbali, Amdia, Char Dighaldi, Chinishpur, Hajipur, Karimpur, Khathalia, Mahishasura, Meherpara, Nazarpur, Nuralapur, Paikarchar, Panchdona, and Silmandi.

Shibpur upzila is the location of the Narsingdi gas field, discovered by Petrobangla in 1990. The Ghorashal power plant, the largest powerplant of Bangladesh, is located in the Palash Upazilla.

Narsingdi serves as an important center for Bangladesh’s garment and textile industries and has several jute mills. Banana and sugar cane are widely grown here. In comparison to metropolitan Dhaka, Narsingdi has a village-like atmosphere.

The primary sources of income for the population is derived from agriculture. Although there are a number of high school and universities in Narsingdi, the average literacy rate remains below 30 percent.
